The Adventures of Chii: Shadows of Valoria by Alisanya is a YA fantasy novel that blends anime and manga with the depth of light novel storytelling. The story centers around Chii, a young catgirl whose tranquil existence is shattered when she loses everything she holds dear. From the first page, Alisanya takes readers on Chii's journey of self-discovery as she encounters a diverse cast of characters, confronts formidable adversaries, and unravels the secrets of her past. Alisanya’s skill at world-building shines through in the vivid descriptions of landscapes, cultures, and magical systems, making it an engaging read for ages 12 and up.
The Adventures of Chii is written in the present tense and provides readers with an immediate connection to Chii. Colorful illustrations bring the characters and action to life, complementing the narrative and adding to the appeal for anime and manga fantasy enthusiasts. Alisanya’s debut novel offers readers an unforgettable adventure that continues into the yet-released Part II, which promises to be equally as exciting. Alisanya melds adventure with a lightheartedness that makes it stand out from other anime/manga fantasy novels. The story is well-written, and I had no problem following the characters or plots. The world-building was perfect and well-paced. This novel is the perfect introduction to a talented storyteller in the YA fantasy genre. Adventures of Chii is a must-read for anyone wanting to experience an unforgettable adventure filled with courage, heart, and the enduring power of hope. I look forward to reading more of Chii’s adventures in Part II.
