The Adventures of Sunny Washington by Dickie Erman transports us to the old South. It's 1858, two years since twenty-eight-year-old Sunny Washington escaped slavery in Mississippi. Sunny's journey to freedom led her to Windsor, Canada. There, luck led her to meet a kindhearted couple who cared for her and offered her a job at their general store. But harrowing memories of a life she weathered at Master Horton's plantation still haunt her dreams. Now a free woman and filled with empathy for those she left behind, Sunny sets out for Mississippi on a quest that might end up reliving the painful nightmares at the plantation. In this riveting story, we board the buck wagon alongside Sunny, her guide Hud, and their horse Midnight and embark on a voyage deep into the heart of the unforgiving wilderness and across to Master Horton's plantation to rescue Sunny's long-lost best friend, Polly. But will they make it back to Canada?

In The Adventures of Sunny Washington, Dickie Erman illuminates history. The main characters are young, high-spirited, and with a diverse set of motivations. They are unrelenting in their pursuit of positive change and a better tomorrow, and their loyalty, love, and resilience remain unwavering. Readers will find their stories uplifting. Sergeant Sam Thomas (a Black man in the United States Army) was my favorite. Sam graduated with honors from Yale Law School and West Massachusetts Military Academy. Now commanding an outpost with seven white deputies, Sam is a distinguished and accomplished young Black man in a white man's world. Readers will find his logic and intellectual reasoning as refreshing as I did. The chapters are short and packed with wonderful personalities, an unputdownable drama, and enthralling action. War and upheaval are fast approaching from the far South. The Adventures of Sunny Washington is a real page-turner. It's touching, gritty, and profound.

The Adventures of Sunny Washington by Dickie Erman tells the story of Sunny, a runaway slave from Mississippi living as a free woman in Canada. Sunny misses her friend, Polly, a house slave living on Master Horton's plantation back in Mississippi. Hud, a kindly young white man, agrees to travel with Sunny to Mississippi to purchase Polly from Horton. This plan takes Hud and Sunny on a grueling but successful journey. After purchasing Polly from Horton, Hud and his companions seek assistance from a US Army outpost in replenishing their traveling supplies. Sunny and Sam Thomas, a black US Sergeant in the outpost, become smitten with each other. Regardless, Sunny and her friends continue their journey to Canada. Simultaneously, Sam has a dangerous mission to complete, which is to help a runaway slave child gain his freedom. Despite the many perils that unfold before them, will Sunny and Sam ever reunite again? And will Sunny, Polly, and Hud make it safely to Canada as planned?

The Adventures of Sunny Washington is an engaging, dramatic tale filled with realistic and well-developed characters. This novel is an exceptional work of historical fiction, deeply grounded in facts, vivid imagery, and evocative dialogue. Dickie Erman skillfully combines these elements to bring Sunny's profound story to life. Sunny, Sam, Hud, and Polly are all portrayed with incredible emotional depth. Sunny, in particular, is an endearing character that will win the affection of all readers. Her determined and caring disposition gives her and her comrades the unyielding courage and strength they need to navigate the situations they face on their journey to and from Mississippi. I appreciate that Erman did not hold back from portraying slavery as accurately as possible. Fans of historical fiction, especially readers who prefer a blend of drama and romance in their novels, will enjoy this intriguing read. Overall, I found this a
captivating story!

The Adventures of Sunny Washington is a historical drama by Dickie Erman. It's the year 1858. After successfully freeing herself from the clutches of her plantation owner in Mississippi, twenty-eight-year-old Sunny Washington has found sanctuary in the home of Luke and Katie Wayne in Windsor, Canada. However, she misses her childhood friend, Polly, who still works as a slave at Mister Horton's plantation in Hamlin, Mississippi. With a man named Hud Dell, Sunny embarks on a dangerous quest to free Polly and travels to Mississippi once again. But now, Sunny, Hud, and Polly must brave dangerous riders and slave catchers on their way back to Canada. Meanwhile, Sunny falls in love with US Army Sergeant Samuel Thomas, who is in trouble with the law for aiding and abetting a runaway slave.

Heartfelt and filled with romance, adventure, and drama, The Adventures of Sunny Washington is a treat for historical fiction and romance lovers alike. Dickie Erman's story sheds light on a dark period of American history while showing how even in adversity, goodness and kindness can prevail due to the actions of brave men and women who continue to fight for what's right despite the circumstances around them. The main characters in this story are likable people who go out of their way to help others. It's easy to root for Sunny and her friends. The plot is full of surprises and will keep readers hooked until the last page. Even though it's a sequel, the book functions perfectly well as a standalone. I enjoyed it very much and highly recommend it!
