The Amalgam is the first book of The Aberration series by Michel Prince. The Aberration Laws were passed when all children born in the year 2000 suddenly developed supernatural abilities out of the blue once they hit puberty. With authorities seeking to capture him, high schooler Riley Weston is swiftly driven by his parents to a sanctuary in Northern Minnesota, where Aberrations are seemingly off the government's radar. However, after he arrives at Camp Satori, Riley finds that there is a discriminating internal hierarchy where the Harveys (people displaying no powers) get treated as second-class citizens. While training to control his powers, Riley and his new friends discover that he possesses multiple Aberration powers, indicating that he may indeed be the special one. Soon, Riley's entire world will turn upside down once he realizes his true heritage and destiny.
Fans of books like The Maze Runner will find plenty to love about The Amalgam. Michel Prince's young adult superhero thriller is full of action, mystery, suspense, and romance. The fast-paced narrative keeps you hooked to the pages, and the plot will have you wondering what's happening next with its surprising twists and turns that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. Prince gives each character a distinct voice, and their unique and vibrant personalities burst out of the pages to make a mark on the reader. Riley is a likable protagonist you want to root for. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and recommend it to young adult readers.
