The Ascendants: Genesis starts during a standoff between a dangerous Post Human and the local authorities. In this intriguing story, Post Humans are the first humans who begin showing signs of special abilities, sometimes unthinkable powers, such as the first Post Human we meet, Cooper. His ability is being able to disintegrate anything he touches and he's got evil intentions on his mind. He is not fazed by anyone until a team of Post Humans out to stop him stand in his way. This is where we meet the Ascendants. They are a group brought together for the sole purpose of stopping others who abuse their abilities. The team is still learning and making mistakes, but it appears they may be needed now more than ever. Cooper is just the first piece of a puzzle that leads to a conspiracy inside the government and the possible start of a civil war. Over the course of the next hundred pages, you get to meet the team, enjoy their interactions with one another, witness several intense action scenes, and even feel the loss of a character who you are probably just beginning to like (I was). You will see how the powers they have affect them in both good and not so good ways.
The author, Christian Green, writes in a way that makes you feel as if you are inside the scenes as a witness, feeling the walls collapse and the ground shake. He introduces us to a group of very different people who are brought together for a better purpose and, in doing do, each grows as a person. You also see these empowered people as just that, people. Not a stoic hero, but an individual learning through their mistakes. Christian also sneaks in a few surprises along the way that may just leave you with your mouth gaping. The only thing I would ask for is more and I think we will get it soon. The story ends with a lot of unanswered questions and I can't wait to read more. A well written, action packed story full of interesting characters.
