The Audacious Ladies of La Gran Sorellanza by K-lee Starland is a fiction novel centered around the important issue of human sex trafficking and sex slavery. Although the story is set a few decades ago, the issue is relevant in today’s society. The story begins with an introduction to the Rizoso family and its mafia connections. It soon becomes clear that dealing in sex trafficking is next on the agenda. However, at this point, the women of the family step in and decide to take matters into their own hands. They form their own group that organizes and rescues girls from the sex trafficking ring. This is their courageous story as they balance being mothers, wives, human rights activists and, most importantly, doing what’s right, no matter what the cost.
The Audacious Ladies of La Gran Sorellanza by K-lee Starland is an important novel in today’s world as an eye-opener to human and social issues. I loved the character of one of the main women in the group, Loretta, as she surmounts odds to challenge what’s wrong, even going against her own family if necessary. Indeed, that is true for every female protagonist in the story. I also enjoyed the writing style in that the story is told from each of the women’s perspectives, in addition to the overarching narrative, and we learn a bit about the background of each of them. The writing is strong, powerful, and quite inspiring. I hope books such as these bring basic human rights issues to light and place them at the forefront of discussions. A great read!
