Harry and Philip always went to the bacon tree for a late-night fill-up. Whether it was breakfast, lunch, or a snack, one could always go to the bacon tree. Though the sun was down, the bacon tree was glowing with salty delight. Harry told the tree that he wanted bacon for yesterday, today, and tomorrow, and also to take away all his sorrow. The tree told Harry that he would give him enough bacon to make him swell up, and Harry danced as he watched the bacon fall. Philip also needed enough bacon for his mom, dad, and his brothers so that they won't be sad. The tree promised to give Philip enough bacon that would last him a lifetime. Philip held up his bucket as bacon rained. They both ate so much that they were stuck in bed with tummy aches and could not play with their friends. Once they recovered, Harry and Philip went back to the tree, asking for bacon. What was the lesson they learned from their experience?

The Bacon Tree by Harrison Martin and Philip Kirby is an adorable story that makes children realize the importance of doing things in moderation. M.T. Bear gives clarity to the concept and the authors' words with bright and colorful illustrations that give the story a good pace and movement. It is a charming story for parents and tutors to use for story-telling and read-aloud sessions to help children understand why it is important to exercise moderation in everything they do.
