Author Biography

Contemporary Scribe of Epic High Fantasy

In the tradition of JRR Tolkien and GRR Martin, Joseph Macolino is a builder of worlds. While other works may be derivative of their worlds few can create at the level of these revered masters. Following the path of his mentors, Macolino constructs epic high fantasy tales of extreme depth and extraordinary richness. As a famous hobbit once said, “If you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.”

When he is not pouring his heart, soul, blood, sweat, and tears into writing good fantasy books, Joseph spends time studying the politics and economics of Earth, and also enjoys studying philosophy from nearly every school of thought; if it has anything to do with social philosophy, he wants to know about it. Through this learning, he admits that most philosophy books are relatively dry in their presentation, but hopes to convey these concepts in a way that people can enjoy and relate to. He looks to accomplish this by providing good epic fantasy books for years to come.

Ultimately, Joseph Macolino built Evorath to be his ultimate fantasy book getaway and wants his readers to enjoy the same luxury.

The Birth of Death is an epic high fantasy novel by author Joseph Macolino, set in an exciting new fantasy world known as Evorath. The first of many stories in this diverse and richly developed world, The Birth of Death’s central characters are the enigmatic Artimus, an investigator whose dreams of a utopian world are slowly sliding away, his love interest, Savannah, and the impetuous Irontail, a warrior longing to put his own personal stamp on the world. As the worlds of these characters collide, those same worlds are crumbling and threatening to fall apart completely. It is up to those who’ve noticed the devastating possibilities in the future to do something about it, and we will discover whether our heroes have the strength to save Evorath or not.

Macolino’s male characters are superbly well developed, and Savannah sometimes had moments where she is able to rise above the ‘beautiful love interest’ stereotype, which was a nice surprise in the generally male-dominated genre of high fantasy. Evorath is indeed an engaging world filled with lore, magic, and races that continued to fascinate me throughout the novel’s journey. The author has done a superb job of taking a familiar genre and injecting some original thinking to reboot it and make it magical to read once again. While the plot holds no real shocks or surprises, it was highly satisfying and came to a mouth watering conclusion that will surely have readers clamouring for the next instalment. Overall, The Birth of Death is definitely recommended to fans of LOTR and Game of Thrones.
