The Bloodless Mask by Cy Wyss is the second mystery novella to feature Lukas Richter, a Junior Inspector in the San Francisco Police Department. At the start of the book – set in 2004 – Lukas is partnered with Inspector Mary Itokawa in investigating the discovery of a headless young female corpse in the ocean down by the pier. Fairly swiftly, they identify the likely source: an orphanage called Home of Love. The police suspect the orphanage manager, Donna Woo, and her dodgy boyfriend, Wei-Jun ‘Ryan’ Tian – owner of the next door dry cleaners – of some involvement in the death. Due to a botched procedure, the case doesn’t stick and the story moves on to 2012. Lukas, now partnered with Homicide Inspector Jim Belfonte, is called to the death of another apparently young girl, found in a room surrounded by five displayed human skulls. Is there a connection to the earlier case and suspects?
The Bloodless Mask is a quick mystery read. It has a unique element in Lukas Richter’s “el ojo loco” – the crazy eye, which seems to offer him unique powers of assessing the feelings of others and even seeing through barriers! I wasn’t sure whether this was supposed to be serious and a genuine fantasy tale or a joke, and I found it rather mystifying. The rest of the book follows the investigation into the second case and shows how the team works together to follow their leads and track down the culprits. If you enjoy a police procedural with a bit of a difference, you will like this tale from Cy Wyss.
