The Blue Snowflake: A Warm Winter Tale is written by Nayra Suarez Guimera and illustrated by Zaida Montes. During a snowy December day, all the little snowflakes were preparing to float softly to the ground below. The other snowflakes noticed that one of them was not the soft white that snow should be. The odd snowflake was blue. The white flakes insisted that the blue one remains in the clouds so that the children could play in the white snow that they expected to see. The blue snowflake listened to all the points the white flakes made but still didn’t understand why they couldn’t tolerate his unique color. What should the blue snowflake do? Should he stay in the clouds as the other flakes told him to or should he float down to the ground and let the world see him for who he is?
The Blue Snowflake: A Warm Winter Tale by Nayra Suarez Guimera is a beautiful story that will help children understand how perfect it is to be unique. A blue snowflake is treated poorly by the normal white snowflakes which leaves him sad, tearful, and full of questions about his own beauty. I love how Guimera points out how important it is not to make others feel bad if they are different because differences should be celebrated. The illustrations by Zaida Montes are lovely images that complement the story and give children a visual idea of what is happening. I recommend this story to anyone with kids because it will help them to see how wonderful a world full of differences and diversity really is.
