“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson. I have mixed opinions regarding this quote, having read The Book of Legends: Amazing, Scary & Entertaining Stories for Kids of All Ages by John King Keller. Spencer’s siblings coaxed him to tell bedtime stories, and he decides they’re old enough to hear legends. When you’re told not to drive on Lottford Vista Road after dark, obey, or you’ll find out why the bridge is called Crying Baby Bridge. Would you like to know what happens to Johnny when he disobeys his parents in The Legend of the Light in the Woods? Practice makes perfect, as Harry learns in The Legend of Hatchet Harry. How close are you to finding a pot of gold? Maybe Legend of the Leprechaun’s Treasure can help you?
The Book of Legends consists of four thrilling short stories that give you goosebumps, chills, and a few smiles. John King Keller’s amusing dedication will first capture your attention, as well as the acknowledgment. Stephen and his siblings have a good flow of dialogue that is realistic. These legends are so unalike, entertaining, yet scary, leaving me deep in thought. I wonder how some parents will react to them compared to tweens. There are so many lessons to learn from them, and Keller has a strong writing flair, so I can imagine how eerily fascinating book two will be in the series.
