The Captain's Dog Part 3 is the final book in this series. Seaman was Meriwether Lewis‘s dog, a big black Newfoundland. The story follows the Lewis and Clark expedition as they make their return trip back towards the Mississippi and St. Louis. The adventure is told through the eyes of Seaman. He shares his time living with wolves, when he left the expedition and rejoined them on down the line. He relates the fight with the mighty dog, Praetorian. On the return trip the mosquitoes were so bad that they plagued not only Meriwether but also Seaman. Seaman remained a faithful partner and pal of Meriwether Lewis through many dangers, Indians and a trip to the Pacific Ocean. When Meriwether Lewis passed away, Seaman returned to St. Louis and his old friends.

This book shows the Lewis and Clark expedition from a different perspective. The story is fictional, but Seaman really did exist. I would like to believe the end of the story, but the truth is, no one knows what happened to Seaman. Seaman was the faithful companion to the very end. Legend says he refused to leave his master’s grave.

I love this story. It makes history interesting, entertaining and realistic. The author successfully depicts the adventure of the expedition. I would recommend this book for children as well as adults. This would be a great way to interest children in history. This is the third book in the series and by far the best.
