The Consent of Shadows is a dystopian thriller by Naza Semoniff. In the not-so-distant future, the inhabitants of the city of Neon live in a constant state of surveillance, supervised by the all-encompassing AI system, Aeterniris. The system scrutinizes and controls all facets of everyone's lives, including the right to bear children, as compliance is the ultimate goal. Aeterniris has wiped out everyone's past, and dissidents are prone to be "reassigned." Jack Aldren, who works at the Bureau, is becoming increasingly disillusioned with his life under the system's regime. But he knows resistance is futile. When he starts receiving mysterious messages, they spark his feelings of rebellion, and soon, Jack finds himself on the run with a woman named Eva. However, he must first reconcile with his past to find his way to freedom.
Inspired by the likes of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, The Consent of Shadows is a cautionary dystopian tale that shows the state of a subjugated society under a totalitarian regime armed with advanced technology and AI. With the recent rise of AI, data theft, and surveillance tech, this book is more relevant than ever. Author Naza Semoniff does a brilliant job of incorporating real-world social issues into a gripping narrative that has you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. What do you do when you've lost your past and can't even trust your memories? This is the premise upon which Semoniff crafts an engrossing plot full of shocking twists and turns. Fans of sci-fi and dystopian thrillers will have a blast with this book. Highly recommended!
