The Count of Monte Cristo, Volume I - The Fall of Edmond Dantès, by Alexandre Dumas and Ian Kirs, is the first of twelve graphic novels and begins with Edmond, our handsome hero, at only nineteen. He is a humble youth and obedient to his former superior, yet unfortunate circumstances place him in a position of authority, and he is caught in the crossfire of jealousy and politics. Instead of coming home to enjoy his deserved rewards and marry the woman he loves, he is charged with a crime, and his future grows uncertain.

The artwork carries the story. It reminds me of a movie that shows pictures so the viewer can follow along. It captures the emotional depth well, and the detail is incredible: the landscapes, the buildings, the people appear as if they were real, not animated. What I appreciate most is the thought that went into the text: it has enough to tell the story and describe the characters, but not so much that it slows the story to a grinding halt. This shows a lot of forethought and skill in presenting a tale of this kind. This first volume sets up the characters and the story for what promises to be a great series. I heartily endorse The Count of Monte Cristo, Volume I - The Fall of Edmond Dantès, by Alexandre Dumas and Ian Kirs for readers of all ages. I doubt you'll be able to stop once you start reading. This book is highly recommended.
