Brylee Branson is about to turn seventeen but her life is far from typical for a seventeen-year-old. She's a dead talker, or medium, someone who can see and talk to the dead. It's a gift she didn't realise she had until her parents moved her from California to New Jersey, right into a haunted house. The Brown House is full of ghosts as well as a curse. Her boyfriend, Ephraim, and Lynley, Brylee's best friend, as well as Ephraim's sister have fallen under the curse and it's up to Brylee to break the spell, but how? Can the dead lead her to the answers before it's too late?
The Crimson Key is the second book in the Visitors series by Christy Sloat and while the first book was great, this one is even better! This book picks up right where the last one ended, pulling me right back into the Brown House and the curse. While we get to reconnect with the characters from the first book, some living, some not, we also get to meet a few new characters, such as Angie Harris the library ghost, and Hala the spiritual adviser who warns her of the pure evil in the Brown House and wants to help Brylee learn to use her gift to help others.
Ms. Sloat is a true wordsmith who knows how make me feel like I am right there in the story along with the characters. Some scenes were so creepy that I honestly got goose bumps while reading. More than a few plot twists and an ending that was a real shocker made this a page-turning paranormal read that leaves me anticipating the next book. While this book is the second in the series, it could be read as a stand-alone because Ms. Sloat does provide plenty of background info. Paranormal fiction fans are going to LOVE this series. While geared toward young adults, it's going to appeal to paranormal fans of all ages.
