Maple the fox is excited because today she is meeting her friends to go on an adventure to the river. In The Cursive Readers Series©: Maple’s Adventure, Maple meets up with Tia the turtle, Remi the rabbit, Dot the duck, Dean the squirrel, and Aspen the fawn. Each friend brings some food or something to play with at the river. They all have a great time, playing and eating, but they know the rules and leave to return home before the sun sets. Maple is sad to say goodbye to her friends, but she knows she’ll see them again soon and can’t wait for their next adventure.
Maddy Rae’s picture book, Maple’s Adventure, is part of the Cursive Readers Series. The text is presented in cursive writing so young readers can easily learn to read cursive. Using simple words, the plot develops with repetitive sentences and phrases, so the key is to improve one’s reading skills and build confidence in reading cursive. The story focuses on the importance of friendships, working together, and having fun with others. With each character being a different animal, the importance of accepting differences is also accentuated. The illustrations by Stories2Life Productions are bright, bold, and colorful and add another dimension to the developing plot. I like the way the author uses some alliteration with several of the animals whose name begins with the same letter as the animal, like Dot the duck. This is an engaging and educational read that will help youngsters develop important reading skills.
