The Deception by Lauren Hudson is the second book in the Ascension trilogy. Now with their arch enemy Jane defeated and the Asterian race saved, triplets Felix, Jink, and Desdemona try to return to normality. Now, back in The House, they must enter a competition to find a new Asterian Society member, a task which takes them to Las Vegas. The excitement is short-lived when while using their special powers to see past and future events, they suspect someone close to them has sinister intentions. The competition soon takes a dangerous twist and the triplets must prepare for their most crucial battle because everything they hold dear is at stake. Can the Anchor children once again triumph over the evil forces that want to damage civilization or is there someone waiting in the shadows to commit the ultimate deception?

I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-paced and thrilling adventure story. I have not read the first part of this trilogy but could easily grasp the plot from the outset. The author has a fantastic talent for setting a scene and transporting you into the pages of the book. Each of the triplets had great characteristics and believable personalities which complemented each other really well. I particularly liked Jinx, her cheekiness and outspokenness were very likable. The relationship between Jinx and Kade was also endearing. I found the plot was constantly moving and full of action as they travelled through time, using their magical powers; there were many twists and turns too which kept you guessing. The whole book was nail-biting because of the perfectly placed conflict and suspense. The dialogue between the siblings is excellent and shows their unique personalities brilliantly. The final few chapters were riveting with a superb twist that I never saw coming. I look forward to the final part of this trilogy with anticipation.
