“The boy was an unknown, but Claire thought unknowns could eventually make something of themselves.” Of course she did, because Claire Benson, the protagonist of The Dyer Legacy by Albert Sipes, is goodhearted to a fault. The story begins when Claire narrowly escapes two would-be assailants in San Francisco, only to meet and befriend the two young men, who turn out to be brothers. As Claire draws nearer to the conflicted siblings, she realizes that they're just average guys who got the short end of the stick in life. Driven by their need to find a father who walked out on them while they were very young, the men, Sid and Mark, become a significant part of Claire's life. With Claire by their side and life slowly offering a brighter future, this unlikely trio forms new friendships on their quest to discover that what happened in the past doesn't necessarily dictate the future.
Excellent at times, and a bit rough at others, The Dyer Legacy by Albert Sipes is a feel-good literary novel that's easy to connect with. The plot focuses on two men who try to reconnect with an unknown past, with the protagonist playing a pivotal role in their adventure. Strong themes of relationships, consequences, family, redemption, and second chances make the novel heartwarming and emotionally resonant. Character development focuses on the three main players, but an ever-growing cast introduces a wide range of realistic individuals, creating a microcosm that reflects people in general. The pace is moderate for the most part, but a touch uneven at others, and is generally well-suited for such a tale. Overall, The Dyer Legacy is a nice and uplifting read and a perfect reminder that sometimes, if we're lucky, we can go home.
