The Fairy Master Capturi by Sunshine Somerville is the fourth book in the epic series The Alt-World Chronicles. In book one, abducted by a mysterious light, Esme awakens in the Sanctuary—an alternate world ruled by magic, mythical races, and a secret Order that needs her unique power to stop a deadly invasion of monstrous creatures. In book two, Esme’s power surges as tensions escalate within the Order. Paranormals rebel, secrets threaten unity, and war looms. Owen and Esme seek ancient truths that could defeat demons, but revealing them may shatter their world. In the third installment, rebellion fractures the Order, and Esme and Owen race to end the war. With allies divided and traitors rising, their final mission into the malevolenci realm may bring victory, or destroy everything they’ve fought to protect. Now, after the Sanctuary war, Piper leads cavali teams across alt-worlds to stop a ruthless goddess. As dryads, naiads, and oreads suffer under her Devout, Piper hides a secret that could cost her everything, even the chance to unite these fractured peoples and end the violence.
The Fairy Master Capturi by Sunshine Somerville gives us a spectacular continuity of worlds. This is wonderfully built and accomplishes perhaps the most difficult puzzle piece in the genre: a story where paranormal is not ornamental; it is embedded into daily life. Potions are practical but limited, and alchemy intersects with just plain living in service of utility. Somerville is also original in the portrayal of classic beings. She reimagines with fresh lore that gives each a cultural, political, and spiritual dimension. Vampires, for example, have an intricate origin and communal abilities that make them feel ancient and purposeful. Divine power plays the most commanding role here, and the goddess isn’t symbolic or distant; she’s active and terrifying, turning faith into destruction. The oreads are caught in a devastating dilemma, forced to weigh obedience against extinction. As for Piper, she is a skilled, driven, and capable, with real agency. She's also smart, interpreting divine havoc as political strategy. Her role connects deadly magic with calculated resistance, making her more than just a witness to events, but an active architect of change in a volatile, enchanted world. Overall, this is a brilliant read. Very highly recommended.
