Author Biography

Writing has been a part of Chris Stead’s life since he was very young. In fact, he won the “creative writing” award way back in Year 3 at school as a seven-year-old. During his senior school years, Chris wrote constantly, be it stories while he was sitting at his desk in class not concentrating on the teacher, or writing up news reports on all the sports and experiences the kids in his local neighbourhood enjoyed every day.
Fast forward a little and Chris’ media career could only be described as diverse. Spanning publications and clients as broad as Maxim Men’s Magazine to the University of NSW to Game Informer Australia and Krash Kids Magazine he has spent 20+ years writing and editing across the Australian media industry.
In 2014, Chris launched a new chapter in his writing life. He founded his own company, Old Mate Media, and launched the first of a range of children’s books in The Wild Imagination of Willy Nilly series. Chris’s vision for the company is that other aspiring writers who would like to create their own digital and print publications – no matter what the topic – will enlist Old Mate Media to help them turn their dream into a reality.

The Fastest Kid in the World: The Wild Imagination of Willy Nilly Book 3 by Chris Stead is a fast-paced children’s illustrated story about a young boy named Willy, and how he manages to create a firestorm of trouble without really meaning to. He aims to give his racer, a “billycart”, a super-speed edge, and ends up with something far more than he can handle.

The artwork used in the story is colorful and detailed. The pictures work well, drawing the reader in and keeping a quick pace. The tale is filled with humor, some hilarious suspension of disbelief, and pages that made me chuckle. I appreciated the dad and son time presented, noting that it was something positive and constructive; a project just the two of them completed together that would create lasting memories for young Willy. Projects like this are the building blocks of positive parent/child relationships that truly help to build long lasting bonds. Though it was not a big part of the story, it struck me as important and a good lesson for parents, especially for those who may not have had positive role models during childhood.

The Fastest Kid in the World: The Wild Imagination of Willy Nilly Book 3 by Chris Stead adds the “safe” factor to the story, so no harm comes to Willy. He even ends up as a winner in a hilarious twist of circumstances. This book is suitable for children ages 4-8 who enjoy adventure stories, and it comes highly recommended.
