The Field of Blackbirds by Thomas Ryan is a story of terrorism, suicide bombings, deception and international treachery. Arban Shala owns a vineyard that he wants to sell. Jeff Bradley is an interested buyer and friend. The negotiations for the sale should be straightforward, but with Arban’s property located in Kosovo, it is not that simple. Post-war Kosovo is a country of corruption. It oozes into every level of society, with even police and government officials not exempt. Problems arise when Arban discovers his property has been seized by two brothers. They have been given ownership of the vineyard as payment for favors. They are not farmers, but cold-blooded, bomb-making killers. Criminal activities in the country are in the tight control of Osman Gashi; a dangerous low-life pimp with immense power. He is not above making unwelcome visitors disappear in order to stay at the top of his game.
The Field of Blackbirds by Thomas Ryan is a fast-paced thriller, guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat. As the story progresses, the UN and the CIA, friends and family of Arban become embroiled in a desperate struggle to save his life which is threatened by the despots running the country. It is a game of cat-and-mouse as he is imprisoned on false charges: there is a bigger, dirtier game being played and knowing who to trust and where to hide become key factors in surviving. If you like a book that has you holding your breath for what comes next, this is one for you. I thoroughly enjoyed this enthralling tale, filled with surprises as corrupt characters are exposed and their dirty deeds made known. A must-read for lovers of thrillers, I found it a great read.
