The Final Pet Stop: Patches the Dog by James S. Martinez is a story that helps children deal with the loss of a pet. Patches and his friends discuss what it is like when a cat or dog dies. They tell of all the wonderful things that the pets that have passed away do at The Final Pet Stop. I wish I'd had a book like The Final Pet Stop: Patches the Dog around when I was little and my pet died. The book shows how the animals that have died are happy at The Final Pet Stop. Martinez explains that they spend their days playing and will never feel pain or hunger again. I admit the book made me feel sad, but at the same time I felt comforted by it. It definitely made me hug my dog a little tighter that day.
I have never heard of The Final Pet Stop before, but I like the idea of it. In fact, I plan to tell my 4-year-old daughter about The Final Pet Stop when the time comes for our beloved Chihuahua. I thought that the illustrations in the book were very nicely done and were very colorful. The illustrator, Timothy T. Civick, even made the snake look cute. I can only imagine how many fish are swimming around up there. Overall, I thought that The Final Pet Stop: Patches the Dog was a good book. I think that veterinarians should have it in their offices to help kids and adults deal with the loss of their pet.
