The First Love Myth by Casey Dembowski follows the story of three sisters navigating love, family, and broken relationships. After discovering her husband's emotional affair with another woman, thirty-four-year-old Liz Madden realizes her marriage to her childhood sweetheart, Julian, is all but over. She moves in with her father and her younger half-sister, Zoey Reid, who is suffering from heartache of her own after her boyfriend, Andrew, cheated on her with her best friend, Claire. Meanwhile, Liz's older sister, Cecilia, struggles with forgiveness, which impacts her relationship with her girlfriend, Evie. Zoey begins a blossoming romance with a young man named Max, while Liz meets Spencer, a newly divorced single father. Will the sisters let go of their pasts and find a way to move on? Can Cecilia forgive her father and accept Zoey as part of her family?
Part family drama and part contemporary romance, The First Love Myth charms its way into your heart and leaves you wanting more. Author Casey Dembowski really excels in crafting realistic characters with layers of depth and fleshed-out personalities. Each of the three sisters has distinct traits and must deal with their own share of issues. But because they are so well-realized, readers can relate to them and be invested in their story arcs. You want to see them as a happy family who are there for each other. The romantic relationships are also very well done. The plot is nicely paced, and the narrative sails smoothly without hiccups. Among the secondary characters, Max, Spencer, Julian, and Patrick will leave their mark on the reader. Fans of chick-lit will find a lot to love about this book. Highly recommended!
