What if an author were to meet his characters in real life, and what if some of the characters he created were horrible monsters? Horror writer Thom Hearn is the very definition of success in his genre, creating bestsellers that are devoured quickly, especially by young readers. But he feels that he doesn’t receive as much attention as he deserves, so when he receives an invitation to travel with the famous Carrie Alexander to a conference, where the greatest minds and movers will be, he thinks it would be an event of a lifetime.

But things begin to go wrong when the pilot of the plane in which they are flying dies and they crash-land in the Amazon rainforest. After days of searching, they finally reach their destination and Hearn is told the invitation wasn’t for him. Swearing revenge, he wants to leave, but he is told all flights are stopped because of a coup. But the worst of his nightmares is just beginning as characters from his books begin to turn up. The Horror Writer by Jerry Jay Carroll is a brilliant work of fantasy that fans of the Inkheart Trilogy by Cornelia Funke will adore.

To say I loved this book would be an understatement. I adored it. I loved the concept behind the book, the dreamlike experience of the protagonist, the wry humor, the excellent and intricate plot lines, and the awesome characters. Jerry Jay Carroll isn’t just endowed with a rich imagination, he also has the singular gift of making fictional characters come alive, making the reader feel like they were part of the story. He does this through the beautiful prose that captures intense moments of action, vivid descriptions of the setting, and the emotional intuition of the characters. This is a work of beauty, and I am sure it will be a delight and great entertainment to fans of fantasy. The Horror Writer is a great success.
