Author Biography

Mark Taylor’s debut novel, Shutter Speed, crash landed on planet earth in 2013. Its dark brooding style benchmarked his writing and has led to further releases of novel and short story collection alike.

While most of Mark’s work is macabre, occasion has it that he will write about kittens and daisies. Just not very often.

Some say he is a product of his environment, others, a product of his own imagination.

Whichever it is he works happily, portraying dark existences on this planet and others. He relays his fears and doubts on his characters, so always has a smile. If Mark is real, as some say he is, you might find him in England.

Perhaps.

While I am usually not one for short stories, The Human Condition by Mark Taylor is one of the best books I have read in the last few weeks. This book is a collection of horror short stories, but they are not the kind of horror you'd expect from a zombie, monster, vampire etc. novel. These horrors are the horrors you can find within the souls of people - and some of those dark thoughts, actions, and behaviours might not be completely unfamiliar to the reader. While we do not (usually!) act on those thoughts, you might find yourself in some of the stories. Have you ever had a bad day at work because you simply couldn't get a single cup of coffee? Have you ever been locked in a room without being able to get out? Have you ever had an affair, or bad thoughts about a person higher in the job hierarchy? If yes, then some of the stories will hit a nerve. But would you go to the same extremes as the people in these stories?

The Human Condition by Mark Taylor takes a look at the dark side of our human lives. Some of the stories were shocking, some not so far from what I can imagine myself. While I did not act like Norton, the guy who did not get his coffee, I can very well understand where his motivations come from. Get me on a day without coffee, and you'll understand... I just loved reading almost every single story in this collection. Highly recommended!
