In 1905 President Theodore Roosevelt sent a large group of officials on a diplomatic mission to Hawaii, Japan, Philippines, China and Korea. With Roosevelt’s approval Secretary of War, William Howard Taft made a series of secret agreements with the Asians. The agreements were unconstitutional.
Alice Roosevelt, Teddy’s daughter accompanied the entourage. Teddy sent her on the mission knowing the press would concentrate on her masking the secret meetings or keeping the Roosevelt name in the headlines. The effect of the secret agreements would later cost the lives of tens of millions. “The full details and implications of Roosevelt’s illicit pacts would remain largely unknown until his own death, and then be effectively erased from the textbooks.
I was fascinated by the personal details of the Roosevelt’s. Alice was Teddy’s daughter by his first wife. However, he rarely acknowledged his first marriage. Alice was a rebellious young lady. I actually felt sorry for her. It was obvious she felt unloved. The Imperial Cruise is not complimentary to Teddy. Fans of history will enjoy The Imperial Cruise.
