In The Inconvenient Child, Sharyn Killens and Lindsay Lewis take us on a life journey and the tough challenges Sharyn lived through in Australia as an unwanted, biracial child. Born out of wedlock and to a white family that had no space for a child of mixed races, Sharyn struggled with feeling neglected early in life. She was not only mistreated by her mother but also wronged by her country's institutions. From abusive nuns to wicked authority figures, Sharyn survived multiple inhumane treatments from the adults who were supposed to nurture future generations. Thankfully, she lives to tell a story that ends with beautiful memories and moments of celebration. Join Sharyn as she reminisces about an awe-inspiring singing career, exciting travels, meeting different celebrities, and finding joy in motherhood.
I loved that Sharyn Killens was very generous toward her mother despite her mother behaving like she was ashamed of her. Sharyn appears to be caring and hopeful even after she struggles with addiction, abuse, neglect, making a living, and not knowing her father. Also, readers receive a deeply enlightening account of history and the political scene of Australia several decades ago. Sharyn's brilliant music career and her other exciting engagements bring her to meet several notable characters. Fans of music icons from the past will enjoy reading her close encounters with Ray Charles, BB King, and other celebrities. The Inconvenient Child has an epic atmosphere and a strong portrayal of transitioning from daunting challenges to tear-jerking, victorious moments. This mostly linear and skillfully written book is one of the best and most evocative memoirs I've read.
