In The Jewish Ninja, Allegra Coleman has given young adult readers a taste of living and growing up in a Jewish community. Following the death of her parents in an automobile accident, twelve-year-old Alexia is forced out of her comfortable world of friends, family, and the local karate community. Alexia lived the near-perfect life with her best friend Tutti and her sudden thrust into a tight-grouped, urban Judaic slum all but shuts her down physically and emotionally. Her Bohemian dress does not put her in good standing in her new school and pretty much everyone shuns her, except a good-looking Jewish boy. Her Bubbe and Zeyde (grandparents) try hard to help Alexia fit in but basically, Alexia must find her own way back to a life that is different and yet positive.

The Jewish Ninja is a positive and growth-oriented book to which most preteens and young teens can relate. You don't need to be Jewish to appreciate the unique culture afforded to those growing up in such a community. You just have to love the character of Alexia for her moxie and her pure determination not to fold under difficult circumstances. She is lucky to have come into contact with the local Rabbi, a man who also marches to a different drummer in life. I laughed at the grandparents as they stayed back in a loving but non-intrusive way. They just seemed to understand that love conquers all. I could have done with a bit less Yiddish at times but, overall, this was a delightful book.
