The Lion and the Impala by Kalenga Augustine Mulenga with illustration and layout by Boutique Books is a sweet story of a curious son who asks his doting father questions about how the circle of life affects both lions and impalas. The story can be read as if the father and son are humans, or as if they are lions. The son is mainly curious about what lions and impalas eat. He is equally curious about the differences in lifestyle between meat eaters and plant eaters. He seems to be on the verge of deciding to be a vegetarian impala when his father reminds him that lions eat impalas. The son’s answer is charming. I’m not going to give it away and ruin the book for you.
The clean simple lines of Boutique Books’ illustrations help the reader see the differences between the lifecycles of lions and impalas. Kalenga Augustine Mulenga describes these differences in the text, without getting gory. The illustrations add details to the dietary information and are sensitively drawn to show the chase, but not the capture. The text, too makes the differences clear without going into details that might upset a sensitive child. I feel this book will help children understand different natural diets and how they contribute to the animal kingdom. If children are considering a vegetarian diet, this book will be of interest because it discusses the food-gathering techniques of meat-eating and plant-eating animals. The Lion and the Impala is an educational introduction to both lions and impalas.
