The Little Red Hen Learns How to Ask for Help by Jasmine Sears is a fresh take on the classic tale. In this version, readers meet a hardworking hen who sets out to bake a loaf of bread and decides to ask for help along the way. However, each animal she approaches refuses, leaving her to complete every step on her own—from harvesting wheat to baking the bread. After a long and tiring day, she begins to wonder if there was a better way to ask her friends. So, she decides to try again. Will the animals still be her friends? Will she learn the best way to speak to them? Will they eventually work together as a team?

I really loved The Little Red Hen Learns How to Ask for Help by Jasmine Sears because it takes a familiar story and gives it a bit of a twist. As an educator, I appreciated the focus on how to ask for help. Often, children have difficulty with that very topic. I can see this starting conversations about manners, using “please” and “thank you,” and how it feels when work and rewards are shared fairly. Kids could also role-play different animals, make their own “plan” for asking for help, or even bake bread together in the classroom (either as a pretend activity or with their teacher's help). The illustrations by Amelia Mangham lend the book a cozy feel, with warm, soft colors and the expressions on the animals' faces. My favorite character is the blue cat. I think it's absolutely beautiful. This is a comforting, engaging read for anyone who likes gentle, values-driven picture books about kindness, friendship, and social skills. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
