In The Magic Of Robola, Effie Kammenou has taken a subject that is personal to everyone especially when experiencing the death of a loved one or family member. This romance is about coming of age, accepting, finding one’s self through grief, and finally walking back into the sunlight to start living again. The main characters are Nikko and Eleni. They are linked by family to the island of Kefalonia and a vineyard that produces wine made from Robola grapes that grow nowhere else in the world but on this tiny Greek Island in the Ionian Sea. Nikko and Eleni had to take a journey in life before they could be united again in love.

The Magic of Robola by Effie Kammenou takes the reader on a journey that spans about 15 years, from the time Eleni loses her parents and brother to the time she loses her beloved grandfather. The author shows so beautifully, and with the utmost understanding, how grief affects each person in their own way. Someone may grieve for a while but then they embrace life again and get on with living, while someone else will shut themselves off from life so that they don’t get hurt. When that person is very young, it can cause them to leave behind the family who loves them and would help them. The author has written Eleni and Nikko's story with so much feeling and emotion that the characters draw you in. At times you want to knock their heads together at how stubborn they are, but the final chapter in their lives is not what the reader expects. It is an inspirational book that, once started, is very hard to put down and it is well worth more than one read. A wonderful story that helped me in my time of grief.
