The Magical Tram by Hayley Frazer follows Clem, a conductor with many jobs who brings the reader along as a newcomer while he and his old friend, a dog, ride a tram that can wander through his memories. The tram takes them to different moments from Clem’s past, from rolling inside a tire to small mishaps at the zoo, and even a time when he mistook his own reflection for someone following him. Each stop is a simple look at something Clem remembers, and the tram’s familiar 'ding!' leads them to a day in Adelaide when Clem once drove a tram before the trams stopped running and buses took over, a moment he watches again with quiet pride.
The Magical Tram by Hayley Frazer is an easy, friendly picture book that moves through Clem’s memories, with the tram guiding each stop and Clem talking directly to the reader as he shares the things he remembers. The story mixes small surprises with everyday moments, helped along by Clem’s habit of doing silly things and the dog’s unexpected behavior, and the illustrations show each memory clearly so young readers can follow along without confusion. There’s a nice blend of simple humor and real places, especially when Clem talks about Adelaide and the changes he saw there, and children can pick up small bits of history without it feeling like a lesson. The book has a relaxed pace that makes it easy to read aloud. The final pages with Clem, the dog, and the tram settling down to rest give it a calm finish. A warm, simple read for young children who enjoy stories that take them through someone’s past in a light, easy way.
