The Monkey Wore Pants by R.S. Hudson is a blend of humor and suspense featuring protagonist Mac Macallan, whose profession as a private investigator, or “Shaman,” as he calls himself, draws him into a murky world of shadowy figures and dangerous liaisons. The plot twists through dark alleys and seedy underbellies, featuring characters from deceitful spouses to streetwise thugs. Macallan is introduced in this first installment of the series as a blend of hard-boiled detective and vulnerable human. His narrative is filled with sarcastic wit and self-deprecating humor. The story begins with a gripping description of a chokehold, setting the tone for a novel in which physical danger lurks around every corner.

The plot features a cast of characters ranging from deceitful spouses to streetwise thugs. The Monkey Wore Pants also explores themes such as betrayal and redemption. Mac Macallan’s backstory, including his complicated personal relationships and former career as a police officer, adds depth to the narrative, making his journey about both solving a case and personal growth and reflection. Detective and mystery genre fans who enjoy the dry humor and keen detail of Lawrence Block’s Matthew Scudder and Robert B. Parker’s series Spencer, with its witty, sharp-tongued protagonist, will feel at home reading The Monkey Wore Pants. The story ends with a bit of a cliffhanger to lead into the next book in the series. R.S. Hudson has crafted a compelling world that invites readers to dive in and join Macallan on his thrilling adventures.
