The Navigator II: Irish Revenge by Steve Coleman is a novel about an ordinary American guy called Joe Anderson who is drafted in as a CIA agent to infiltrate the IRA in Ireland. Joe, who poses as a tourist and sailor, has his own reasons for taking on the dangerous task assigned to him. The story is set against the background of the country's entrenched political and religious troubles. Leaving one girlfriend behind in America, he falls for another, a fiery Irish redhead who is deeply involved with the Republican faction. Joe also befriends an indomitable Irishman called Big Ryan who he comes to rely on. Set in 2015, this is a sequel to The Navigator: A Perilous Passage, Evasion at Sea, but can be read as a stand-alone novel.
Steve Coleman has written a perceptive story line perfectly capturing the day-to-day violence and hatred of the sectarian troubles in Ireland. He takes the reader on a historical as well as a thrilling political adventure. His intimate knowledge of Irish history and as a sailor around the Irish coastline adds great depth to the story. The Navigator II: Irish Revenge is laced with personal, political and religious intrigue. The plot is fluid, leading the reader effortlessly through a string of unpredictable twists and turns. The machinations of the characters held my interest and continued throughout with Joe, our reluctant hero, falling unwittingly into a series of life or death situations. There is a simplicity and ease to the writing which will appeal to many people. I found the lack of graphic violence, so common to many books of this genre, very refreshing.
