The Ollie Dog Quartet, by Victor Alfaro, is a good children’s book. The author is able to capture the sense and feel of the main character, a dog named Ollie. Ollie tastes freedom when a human cutting the grass leaves the yard gate open. Ollie is excited to experience new adventures and goes exploring. He just can’t resist it. Ollie wants to visit his friend, Greta, but doesn’t know the route. On the way, he gets kidnapped and his adventure begins. He experiences four great adventures that are sure to delight young audiences. Ollie’s thinking is very funny and is very believable. The author captures the spirit and mind of a dog very well.
The book is illustrated nicely by Christopher Alfaro. One of the few complaints I have about this book is that there are not more illustrations as they are so engaging to the eye. I would recommend that Christopher Alfaro add more art work because that’s what children love – the beautiful images and colors. The storyline is for a much younger audience and for parents to read to their children, so if there are not a lot more pictures, the child may lose attention. Ollie is sure to go on future adventures and this can be a series. I feel this is a good addition to any child’s book collection.
