The Other Woman is a story about infidelity, but not the typical tale of lies and cheating and sordid sex. Sienna and James work together and, despite this, she developed a romantic relationship with him under the assumption that he was a single man. Obviously, he was not so much single as married and so the story begins. The “love” story between Sienna and James unfolds as regular relationships do and just as she thinks she’s falling in love with him, she learns of Bailey, the wife. Marisa McLean does a fantastic job of painting the image of the other woman, living a life on hold while waiting for James to get a moment away from his real life and his wife. Then life gets really complicated when Sienna learns that she is having James’ baby…and so is his wife.
The Other Woman is a solid story, but also an exercise in frustration. I guess the credit for that belongs squarely in the capable hands and mind of Marisa McLean. You want to be sympathetic to Sienna’s feelings about James, but most of the time you simply want to shake her and say, “He’s married, you idiot!” And James, well, he is as despicable as they come; not only is he a cheater but he is selfish and possessive as well. I want to feel sympathy for these characters, but I just can’t because they all made choices so again, the level of frustration with James, Sienna and Bailey was at a fever pitch before everything wrapped up. The writing and character development were great, even if some of the dialogue was a little wooden. The Other Woman is a roller coaster ride of a story that will make you happy to be single or blissfully coupled.
