The Quartermaster & the Marquis' Son by A.E. Kendall is a historical LGBT romance that will take you onto a pirate ship and show you life on the high seas. The story follows Galen and Michel. Galen, the 26-year-old Quartermaster of Fair Wind, hasn’t had an easy life. He knew that to survive he had to harden his heart and make sure not to show any emotions or weaknesses. When he saw a lone ship approaching, he saw that as an opportunity to grab everything in that ship, be it riches or people. Little did he know that he would meet his destiny on that ship!
Michel Laurent du Montbron, third son of Marquis d'Sevigne-Chambord, has lived a pampered and naïve life. He started the journey to Jamaica to join his older brother. He had no idea that his ship would be taken by pirates and he would find a man who would make his heart flutter, the man who captured him in the first place. The two men are from the opposite sides of the world and society. Do they have a future? Can they have a future?
This was an intense and very demanding read. I enjoyed the tussle between the two protagonists. There was passion, restraint, and a need for dominance. The two men were masculine despite being gay, and I really liked that. Sometimes writers overshadow the masculinity of their gay characters. Not all gay men like to wear makeup or wear heels. This is the reason why these characters are memorable. A.E. Kendall did an amazing job in creating a story and developing characters that will stick with you for the long haul.
