The Quiet Girl by Nichole Heydenburg is a young adult thriller about the decisions one makes and the consequences thereof. When the shy and introverted Violet makes friends with Jess and Kayla at her new school, she thinks her days of getting bullied by Mallory and her clique are over. But it seems their friendship comes at a price. However, with the crush she’s developing on Jess, Violet fails to see the danger lurking behind those dreamy eyes. Things get way out of control when Violet gets caught up in the middle of a terrifying game between Mallory and Jess. What has she gotten herself into? But Violet has no idea about the trouble coming her way, and the boy she loves is just getting started.
Engaging and well-written, The Quiet Girl effectively addresses the trauma bullying inflicts, which affects millions of girls all over the world. The feelings of isolation bullying create can heavily impact one’s self-worth, and I love that Nichole not only brings this social issue to the forefront but others as well, such as Kayla’s issues with her mother. Violet’s experiences are what initially drew me to her and made her relatable, but as her character developed, I found myself becoming invested in her as a person. I liked the easy pace of The Quiet Girl as well as its dark tone; it was intriguing and fun, although at times I couldn't help but feel sympathetic toward the evildoers. The plot was good and held my attention to the end. I recommend The Quiet Girl to girls who’ve struggled with bullying and feelings of not being good enough.
