Anna Stewart and her younger brother, Edward, are forced to leave their home in Columbia, South Carolina, after it is burned to the ground near the end of the Civil War in The Rancher Takes a Cook by Misty M. Beller. Living for a time with caring neighbors, they finally move to Seguin, Texas, to join their aunt and uncle. The ugliness of the war meets them there, however, as Union troops entrusted with enforcing peace pick on Edward and even threaten Anna. The opportunity to sign on as a cow hand with a local rancher seems ideal to Edward, but Anna searches out the ranch to say that the situation is just too dangerous. Instead of securing her brother’s release from this employment, Anna signs on as the new cook for the ranch. Little does she realize that love will find her out here in the vast openness of Texas cattle country, but not without some harrowing adventures that test her faith in the protection of the Lord. Will Anna succeed in making a new home for herself and her brother, or will obstacles like wild animals and desperadoes get in the way?
For the perfect blend of history, adventure, faith and friendship, not to mention a budding romance, The Rancher Takes a Cook is the book to read. Misty M. Beller has written an entertaining as well as exciting story that warms the heart, affirms your faith, and makes you want to read more. Fortunately, this is Book 1 of the Texas Rancher Trilogy so the characters that have been so lovingly created are ready to share more of their adventures. Great story! I love the combination of history, positive values, romance and adventure. Just the right amounts of each to move the story along with interest and excitement. For romance readers who enjoy an old-fashioned relationship with Christian values, this book is ideal.
