The Running Experiment: A Weekly Walk Away From the Sofa by Kristann Monaghan consists of 53 essays that were initially blog posts, gathered into a book on how to get off the couch and start exercising in order to lose weight and become healthier. Each essay covers a week so there are 52 essays for the whole year, plus the last one: the author’s final thoughts on the subject. The author, who calls herself “Fat Girl” throughout the book, sets herself as an example, drawing on her personal life in order to inspire her readers and motivate other women in similar situations to change their exercising and eating habits. The tales are funny and they cover all the aspects of a fat girl’s life from embarrassing accidents due to extra weight to happy moments that everyone can enjoy, regardless of their weight.
The book is funny and written in a conversational way without losing its motivational underline. After each chapter there is a note page where the reader can make their own notes related to the subject covered in that essay. The stories with their outcomes can be personalized to each individual. The book is enjoyable to read, with laugh-out-loud moments and sad moments, followed by optimistic messages all over again. The overall message is that if you are consistent, you can achieve your goal, even though your weakness for food could kick in at any time. The author, Kristann Monaghan, is the first one to prove it with this book.
