“The Safe Man” introduces readers to Brian Holloway, a locksmith soon to become a father. Brian was called to the home of an author, Mr. Robinette, to open an antique floor safe; he not only wanted the safe opened but removed from his home. Mr. Robinette insisted the door to the safe be placed with the trash; having recognized the workmanship of the door of the safe, Brian returned to the estate to retrieve the door. Later the police come to question Brian concerning Mr. Robinette’s missing daughter.
“The Safe Man” proves the depth of Michael Connelly’s talent. The author is well known for a series of books with Harry Bosch as the leading character. “The Safe Man” is a haunting, compelling read. I would recommend the author compile this short story and others into an anthology. Although this is a ghost story it displays a sense of realism. The descriptions are superb and the plot is filled with crafty twists and turns. This tale is not scary but has a quality of eeriness. Once again Michael Connelly has provided evidence of talent for character development, creating a perceptiveness of place and worthy story lines. The ending left me questioning – if Brian knew what was going to happen in the future how far would he go to make changes. This tale was originally published under an assumed name. I am left to wonder what other treasures Michael Connelly has hidden away; perhaps some day he will treat us to another of his ghost stories. We can only hope.
