The Scoundrel Scot is the first book in the Highland Hearths series by Vanda Vadas. The story follows Lachlan MacLanoch, a rakish Scottish laird who is unwilling to marry after past betrayals and his apparent wariness of love. However, he has a soft heart that always gets him into trouble. His heart and resolve are tested when Lady Helene Beckett comes to live at his estate. She is an English aristocrat, and Lachlan has to protect her. But Helene is here for a reason and has a secret mission. She needs to seduce and deceive Lachlan, or else her sister’s life could end very soon. Soon, her manipulations turn into real feelings, and both Lachlan and Helene start falling for each other. As outside forces try to force them apart, they must fight against their pasts and make their love stronger so that it lasts a lifetime.

Author Vanda Vadas's wonderfully entertaining, historical romance, The Scoundrel Scot, had me falling in love with Lachlan. He was broody, charismatic, and the perfect protagonist to make me read on until the end. Helene was his opposite yet perfect for him. She had the fire and the desire to make Lachlan fall in love with her. The plot was fun, and the conflict was exciting. I loved how their chemistry developed over time, and they fell hard for each other at just the right moment. I also loved that the author didn’t undermine their emotional journeys and development. We saw Lachlan open his heart to love, and Helene stop fighting so hard, yet remaining true to herself. The pace was perfect, the narrative style was amazing, the setting reflected the 1700s, and the descriptions of Scottish society were fascinating. I cannot wait to see what the author has in store for us in the next book!
