The Serpent Underneath is a work of fiction in the socio-political, thriller, and dystopian subgenres. It is best suited to mature adult readers owing to its complex themes and content. Penned by author Julie A. Fragoules, this chilling vision of things that might come in the future of humanity examines the possibility of life after a total collapse in the USA. Replaced by the stringent rule of the New Republic, the pressure to conform is enormous, and resistance is laced with danger. So when a man emerges from a twenty-year coma into a world in tatters, he becomes part of a series of events that could challenge the New Republic and cause some turbulent rebellious times to be born again.

Author Julie A. Fragoules has crafted a sweeping adventure that touches on the darker side of humanity whilst also offering an inspiring, realistic, and intrinsically moral cast of central characters to root for. These intrepid figures are working for justice, not only their own survival and clarity, within the atmospheric dystopian land of post-apocalyptic America, and their anti-hero approach to action is refreshing and believable for the world that Fragoules sets them in. I felt that the care taken to explore political pressures, social systems, conformity, and criminality was really sharp and well-considered, and it’s the juxtaposition of these dark explorations against the pure desire for truth, family, answers and being connected to other human beings that makes the novel so simultaneously interesting and heart-breaking. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend The Serpent Underneath as a highly accomplished work of dystopian fiction for fans of political thrills and literary writing everywhere.
