The Side Hustle by Colin Conway is a gripping mystery about identity, money, and the blurred lines between hustle and survival. Jacob Kidwell’s death could easily be ruled as an accident, except for the fact that Detectives Quinn Delaney and Marci Burkett suspect foul play. As their investigation unfolds, the detectives discover that Kidwell, known online as Frugal McDougal, was a rising personal finance blogger and a part-time real estate agent. Someone is snooping around the case, asking questions. Kirby Willis is hustling to escape the 9-5 grind and achieve financial freedom. So when his friend and fellow blogger is found dead at the bottom of the stairs, Kirby tries to wrap his head around it. Determined to make sense of Jacob’s death, Kirby starts asking questions and is shocked to discover a darker side to the charming man he admired, dark enough to have him murdered.
The Side Hustle is about identity—how people present themselves online and how we can be blind to certain versions of them. The more Kidwell’s sordid life comes to light, the more Kirby is shocked by how little he knows about the man he considers his friend. In addition to the riveting mystery, Colin Conway’s The Side Hustle is a treasure trove of financial advice. At the story's core are incisive insights into consumer culture, the gig economy, and the relentless chase for financial freedom. The characters reflect different outlooks on finances. This modern whodunit, with its twists and turns, false leads, and suspects who all hold a grudge against the victim, will appeal to mystery fans who will want to know who killed Jacob Kidwell, but also who he truly was.
