The Silver Sail is a work of fiction in the fantasy adventure subgenre and it forms the second novel in the Coseema Saga after The Twin Stars. It is suitable for the young adult reading audience and was penned by Bridgette Dutta Portman. In this exciting continuation of the epic fantasy saga, we find our protagonist Olive still trapped in the fantasy world that she created as a young writer, but which is now out of control and overtaken by a former hero, now reborn as a supervillain because of Olive’s misguided attempts to help her. What results is a psychological journey into Olive’s fears, which lie buried in the world she created, and must now be faced to save the people she loves.
One of the first features that struck me about this fascinating and entertaining novel was its worldbuilding, which takes into account both the fantasy genre aspects that need to be in place for convincing tyrannical lore, but also the psychological aspects which reflect Olive’s psyche and why she might have crafted this world as she did. Bridgette Dutta Portman holds up a fantastic mirror in antagonist Coseema, who represents a great many things that Olive both fears and admires, and this sets up a gorgeously penned emotional journey with many heart-breaking choices and thrilling twists. The Silver Sail is a must-read for fans of the first novel, and the series, in general, would be a fantastic recommendation for young adult readers seeking an emotive and relatable protagonist.
