In The Therans: Secrets Beneath Scars by Cyndi Brec, teenager Callie reels in the aftermath of a traumatic car accident, coming to terms with losses and a scar that is more than it appears to be. At school, she faces gossip but makes some friends, and even connects with a boy named Trystan. Strange visions and a mysterious photo prompt Callie's search for answers, leading to explorations of ancient civilizations and a deeper look into her family's history. In a letter, she discovers her true heritage as a member of the Theran people. With Trystan's help, she begins to understand her unique abilities and role in fulfilling a prophetic vision. As she discovers more about her past, Callie becomes embroiled in a string of mysterious events and a series of murders, ultimately joining forces with surprising allies to reveal the truth and prevent further harm.
Most people will tell you that their experiences of prepping for prom were memorable, but I'm unlikely to take anyone else seriously after reading The Therans: Secrets Beneath Scars by Cyndi Brec. I like Callie. She's a smart girl with enough grit to do what's right but with just the right amount of teenage angst to make her feel authentic. Brec uses a letter and some lengthy expositions in dialogue format to explain the supernatural elements, and they do occasionally come across as loquacious, but, given the length of the book and everything that she packs into it, it's understandable. I most enjoyed when Callie began intensive training and the true nature of what she was capable of -- if she had the strength and fortitude to get there -- was exceptionally well depicted. As far as young female protagonists go, I like the one who pushes so hard that people have to tell her, “Forget the world and take a break.” Hopefully the break between books one and two of this series isn't too long because it feels like it's going to be a good one. Recommended.
