The Tide Waits for No Woman by Richard K. Perkins is a historical novel set in the Civil War era. The story follows Abby Anderson, a newlywed grappling with the loss of her husband, Clifford, who is presumed dead after his ship is lost in the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Abby defies societal norms and expectations of mourning by joining an Underground Railroad operation in Woolwich, Maine. Her journey takes a dramatic turn when an early winter storm traps her and the fugitive slave family she is aiding in the remote Maine wilderness. The novel masterfully portrays the harsh realities of survival in the wilderness, as Abby and her companions, a diverse group including Bill Boudreaux, an Acadian trapper, and two Abenaki teenagers, must rely on each other to endure the long, unforgiving winter.
The narrative is filled with historical details, vivid descriptions, and authentic dialogue. Richard K. Perkins captures the tension and danger of the Underground Railroad, highlighting the bravery and sacrifices of those involved.
