In The Tribe by Beraud Rock, humanity’s remnants arrive on Gemmi7a, a world of twin suns, shifting weather, and dangerous terrain, where survival depends on adaptation, technology, and strategic coordination. Ye-Min, equipped with a sentient AI named Cyclops and supported by the combat-ready Android 990, observes a group of humans who have formed a ritualized society around a false idol. She establishes a concealed base, monitors resource use, provides medical support, and guides the tribe’s movements to improve safety and sustainability. Across frozen plains, volcanic regions, forests, and coastal caves, Ye-Min and 990 encounter dormant and active Androids, aggressive wildlife, and treacherous landscapes, while hunting beacon signals critical for planetary communication. Ye-Min's fight to secure the tribe’s survival relies on advancing toward the network of beacons, determining the long-term stability of their new home.
The Tribe by Beraud Rock is a masterclass in strategic foresight and ethical decision-making in a time when humanity is oppressed in inhumane ways. Ye-Min is a brilliant protagonist, and there are some real fist-pump moments, especially in relation to Donghyun Han's control over the tribe and the elevation of competent members, while still ensuring the safety of the vulnerable. There are a lot of moving pieces, but Rock lets them slide into place with a satisfying click. There is a great hunger for stories that lean into deceptive authority and manipulation in the guise of what's best for the people. The covert lengths that Ye-Min goes to manipulate appearances, enforce new hierarchies, and guide the tribe toward survival, without becoming the very thing they are moving away from, is exactly what I wanted at the top of my reading pile this week. Overall, this story is intelligent, timely, and completely immersive. I look forward to what comes next.
