The Unbroken Horizon is a work of fiction in contemporary drama, historical fiction, and interpersonal drama subgenres. It is best suited to mature readers owing to scenes of sexual violence and graphic terminology for racism and racial violence in the early twentieth century. Penned by author Jenny Brav, this gripping tale takes place in two timelines around a century apart. Humanitarian nurse Sarah Baum has worked in many crisis zones and faced many personal traumas in her own life, but when she begins to dream of being a scared Black girl hiding in the forest consistently, the shift causes her to explore more of her own origins. Meanwhile, in 1914, teenage Maggie Burke flees after her brother and father are lynched, only to find that life is just as difficult further up north.

Author Jenny Brav has crafted a highly emotive story of human connections, survivalism, and the strength we find within ourselves to live through trauma. One of the things I admired most about the crafting of this work was the generosity that Sarah’s experience working in humanitarianism gives her perspective, allowing space to explore and respect racial prejudice and violent acts of discrimination. This really brings Maggie’s tale into even starker contrast, highlighting her strength against all the adversity that history had to throw at her, but also reminding us, here and now, that the work for equality is far from over. Overall, The Unbroken Horizon is a poignant and moving tale of triumph, connection, loss, and hope that readers of accomplished dramatic works are sure to adore.
