“There comes a time in every vamp’s life when she must stand for something. I will no longer run like the coward many take me for. On this night I stand for the pride of my den.” Zurie Valentine is a toxin vamp and a merchant, trading special and rare artifacts with vampires and humans alike. The vampires lead a lowly existence under the deal they made with the powerful Clerics, human knights with special weapons who are equal to the night creatures in battle. Zurie seems content with her life and her obsession with artifacts until a rare and often aggressive Sasabonsam, a foreign vampire from the Dark Continent, visits her shop. The Unworthy Blood Knight is the first installment in A Fantasy Tale of Vampires, Clerics, and Aristocrats series by Negus Lamont.
The Unworthy Blood Knight has an impressive and surprisingly eclectic world-building that combines the best of fantasy and supernatural genres. Vampires, humans, lycans and other beings populate Negus Lamont's fantasy tale, rampant with raw survival instinct, greed, honor, bloodlust and more. The plot was more extensive than I anticipated and there are lots of exciting fight scenes and suspenseful moments. The characterization is solid; protagonist Zurie is a meek vampire who is destined for a greater and more dangerous life than she could ever imagine. She's easy to empathize with but her self-doubt is her biggest hurdle. That said, when her anger and confidence do soar, she’s quite the fearsome vampire she was meant to be. These alternating periods of her persona serve as Negus Lamont's rendition of bipolar disorder which I find ingenious. Fast-paced with excellent twists, this is a commendable story and a great start to the series.
