The Woods of North San Juan is a supernatural tale written by T.E. Fromhold. Richard Burke is a tenured professor of history who lives on the coast in Los Angeles. But after the shooting death of his fiancee, Richard is looking for something else, and he purchases a Victorian ruin in the middle of 20 wooded acres in North San Juan, a small town in the Sierra Nevada foothills. His friends Carol and Scott are concerned about Richard and think this move is an unhealthy way of coping with his loss, but Richard has fallen for the solitude, open spaces and clean air of Northern California. A week after he moved in, Richard hasn't unpacked, and Esther, the realtor who sold him the property, is alarmed by the drastic change in his appearance. Something in the old house has terrified Richard.
T.E. Fromhold's supernatural tale, The Woods of North San Juan, is not a story you'll want to read late at night, but, despite that warning, I must confess that I did exactly that and had the most marvelous time. Richard's old Victorian house has some terrifying occupants, and sometimes I found myself hoping that he'd just drive away and order a demolition crew to deal with the haunted ruins. Fromhold's vivid and arresting descriptions bring both the old ruins and the Sierra foothills alive. The plot beautifully unfolds, and it's filled with suspense, history and even a bit of romance. I enjoyed reading The Woods of North San Juan. It exceeded my expectations and is probably the best ghost story I've read in some time. The Woods of North San Juan is grand Gothic fiction, and it is most highly recommended.
